The CEPC Expo 2024 in Bhadohi, held from October 15th to 18th, was a spectacular celebration of India’s rich tradition of carpet weaving. Spread across two vibrant floors and featuring an impressive 244 stalls, the expo offered a diverse array of handmade carpets, attracting buyers and industry professionals from around the globe. As attendees ourselves, Rajeev Babbar and I, Panna Rashmi Ray, from Tiger Pug, had the privilege of experiencing firsthand the incredible craftsmanship, innovation, and hospitality that made the event so special.

A Warm Welcome for Dignitaries

The expo began on a high note with a formal inauguration by the Hon’ble Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, and a host of top government officials. They were warmly welcomed by Shri Kuldeep Raj Wattal, Chairman of CEPC, along with other members of the Committee of Administration. The excitement and commitment from the government to support the carpet industry were palpable, setting a strong tone for the event.

From the very start, it was clear that this year’s expo was not just about showcasing products, but about celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage and the global recognition of its handmade carpets.

A Truly Global Event

The CEPC Expo 2024 attracted over 235 international buyers from 38 countries, including Australia, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Egypt, France, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, and the USA. With over 255 buying representatives, the expo was a testament to the growing global demand for Indian carpets and rugs.

The event wasn’t just about numbers—it was about connection. Buyers from all corners of the world came to appreciate India’s finest craftsmanship, and the expo succeeded in bridging the gap between local artisans and the global marketplace.

A Thoughtfully Organized Layout

Spread across two floors, the layout of the expo was designed with convenience in mind. Direction arrows were strategically placed to guide visitors to essential facilities such as lifts, stairs, washrooms, the canteen, and more. This attention to detail ensured that we could explore the vast array of stalls easily and focus on the beauty of the carpets without any confusion.

Showcasing the Best of Indian Carpets

The expo displayed an extraordinary variety of carpets, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovations. Each stall revealed something unique, showcasing India’s expertise in catering to both classic and contemporary tastes. Some standout highlights included:

·         Hand-knotted Carpets: The crown jewels of the expo, these intricately woven masterpieces reflected the unparalleled skill of Indian artisans. Luxurious and timeless, these pieces, often taking months to complete, were highly sought after by buyers looking for unique, high-end rugs.

·         Hand-tufted Carpets: A stylish, more affordable alternative to hand-knotted rugs, these carpets offered dense, soft textures, making them popular with buyers who needed quality and quicker production.

·         Handloom, Flatweave, and Dhurries: Lightweight and versatile, these carpets appealed to those seeking minimalist, durable options. Known for their easy maintenance and geometric patterns, they were perfect for high-traffic areas and modern interiors.

·         Sustainable Carpets: Many exhibitors showcased eco-friendly designs made from natural fibers like wool, jute, and organic cotton. Dyed with plant-based colors, these carpets met the growing demand for sustainable products without compromising on craftsmanship.

·         Outdoor and Polypropylene Carpets: Designed for durability, these carpets were perfect for outdoor spaces like patios and balconies. Polypropylene rugs, known for their stain resistance and affordability, offered practical yet stylish solutions for both outdoor and high-traffic indoor areas.

One of the most fascinating aspects we encountered was the family-run businesses behind many of these stalls. Almost all of them were family businesses, with some being run by the third or fourth generation of weavers and carpet-makers. It was inspiring to see how deeply rooted this craft is, passed down from generation to generation, keeping the tradition alive while embracing modern innovations. Rajeev and I had the opportunity to visit some of these family businesses, and it was truly humbling to witness the legacy and passion behind each product.

The variety of textures, patterns, and materials available at the expo showed how Indian manufacturers are catering to both traditional tastes and contemporary needs. Whether buyers were searching for luxury, sustainability, or practicality, the expo had something for everyone.

Additionally, live weaving demonstrations at several stalls allowed visitors to witness firsthand the meticulous craftsmanship behind every handmade rug. Watching skilled artisans work on their looms was a humbling reminder of the time, effort, and expertise required to produce these stunning creations. It was an engaging experience that helped buyers connect with the rich tradition behind each carpet, enhancing the value of every purchase.

Hospitality and Refreshments: A Thoughtful Touch

The expo didn’t just excel in its displays—it also made sure attendees felt welcome throughout the event. A canteen within the exhibition hall provided delicious food at reasonable prices, making it easy for visitors to grab a bite between browsing the stalls.

Water was available at every stall, with small bottles offered to ensure everyone stayed hydrated. Many exhibitors went a step further by providing snacks like nuts and cookies for buyers, creating a warm and hospitable atmosphere. A particularly charming touch was the free distribution of kullad chai—tea served in traditional clay cups—that added a uniquely Indian feel to the event.

Gala Party at the Taj Varanasi

In addition to the excitement of the expo itself, CEPC organized a memorable gala party at the Taj Varanasi for international buyers. The event was a highlight of the expo, featuring live music and a lavish buffet dinner. Rajeev and I attended, and it was truly a wonderful evening—filled with vibrant conversation, delicious food, and an atmosphere of celebration.

The gala wasn’t just a chance to relax after the busy expo—it was a great opportunity to connect with buyers and industry professionals from around the world in a more informal, friendly setting. The stunning location at the Taj Varanasi only added to the magic of the night, making it an unforgettable experience.

A Welcoming Experience for Visitors

For us, the expo was more than just a business event—it was a fully immersive experience. The thoughtful layout, hospitality, and variety of products on display made for an enriching experience. Buyers and visitors alike praised the organization and the diversity of offerings, from high-end luxury carpets to more affordable, eco-friendly options.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Indian Carpets

As the CEPC Expo 2024 drew to a close, it was clear that this wasn’t just another industry event—it was a celebration of Indian craftsmanship. The strong international presence and enthusiastic buyer response are clear indicators that the global appetite for Indian handmade carpets is only growing.

With continued government support, dedication from artisans, and a growing focus on sustainability, India’s carpet industry is poised for even greater success.

The expo left a lasting impression, not only because of the stunning craftsmanship on display but also due to the sense of community and collaboration it fostered—honoring the past while confidently stepping into the future.
